CHAMBER MUSIC in Børsen TUESDAY, MARCH 12, AT 7:00 PM
The experience:
The chamber music concert at the Halvorsen Music Festival presents music from the finest repertoire of the Romantic era.
Edvard Grieg's Piano Trio, the only work he wrote for trio, yet among the most performed at festivals. The Andante in C minor features Grieg's unmistakable themes, rooted in the Norwegian musical language. From dark minor to brighter major, melancholic and intense, as we recognize Grieg's music.
F. Mendelssohn wrote two great piano trios. On the program this evening is Trio No. 1 in D minor. An early romantic masterpiece in 4 movements, filled with more beautiful themes than most composers write in their entire careers. Particularly, the first two movements abound with lovely melodies. Then a playful Scherzo, followed by a thrilling finale, where the brilliant composer Mendelssohn unfolds his entire repertoire of composition and expressive ability. Johannes Brahms' Piano Quartet in C minor will be performed after the intermission. Brahms' unhappy love for Clara Schumann is expressed in this composition. The first movement (Allegro non troppo) is a stormy movement that alternates between violence and soaring passion. The second movement, Scherzo, is an exciting, frenetic musical conversation. The third movement is a tender love song without words. The warm first theme is introduced by the cello, then becomes a sensual duet between the cello and violin. This music gives us a sense of deep longing, mystery, while the final measures are a poignant farewell. The last movement (Allegro comodo) is again stormy and intense. Music that strikes the listener's heart, intensely and virtuosically captivating.
The concert is in two parts, with an intermission, and lasts until approximately 20:40.
